What’s The Recovery Like For FTM Top Surgery?

Share Article
Predicting Your FTM Top Surgery Recovery

FTM top surgery will give you the masculine or androgynous chest that you’ve always wanted. Like any surgical procedure you will need to make time to recover. However, recovery for FTM top surgery is easy on the body and mind if you adhere to your surgeon’s guidance.

Rest

The most important thing to remember in your post-surgery days is to relax. You will need to take time off work or school to rest. Generally, it is recommended that you take 10 days off to recoup. If your job requires you to sit at a desk you may be able to return to work after a week. On the contrary, if your job requires heavy lifting on your part, you may want to take an 10-15 days off to ensure that you can raise your arms comfortably. Resting and caring for your post-op chest will make for a speedy recovery. If you rush back to work too soon, you could hinder your body’s natural healing process.

Care

Your surgeon will give you post-op care instructions. You need to follow them in order to let your body heal and to help minimize scarring. For pain relief, do not take anything that wasn’t prescribed by your surgeon. You may also be prescribed antibiotics, so remember to take them.

Exercise

As soon as you feel up to it you should try light walking. Physical activities play a large role in our day-to-day wellbeing and your post-surgery time is no exception. But, please be careful. Keep your exercise simple and stick to slow walks and avoid lifting weights in the week following your FTM top surgery. Once three weeks have passed, you should be able to lift about 5lbs. After 4-5 weeks you can resume your normal exercise routine and do heavier cardio and weightlifting.

Intimacy

Physical exertion will increase your heart rate and blood pressure. This will lead to increased swelling and possible complications. Wait at least 4-6 weeks before being intimate with anyone to ensure that your body is ready to handle the physical factors that go along with it. Undergoing FTM top surgery is a big step but a worthwhile one. The recovery process isn’t complicated and if you listen to your body and follow your surgeon’s instructions, you should be back at work/school in no time. If you have any questions about the procedure itself or the recovery, do not hesitate to contact us.
